Working Underground

One of the most challenging types of photography is architectural. Add to that the buildings are all underground dimly lit by small lamps. For me a challenge is always welcome and this was no exception.

Tony welcomes visitors to the Desert View

The biggest obstacle was correcting the lighting for the warm exposed earth walls and roof structure. A lot of selective lighting was employed in combination with some inventive bounce flash.

I really don’t like shooting wide however some of these set ups required the 24mm lens.

Additional lighting is always needed to provide any sense of ambient light, making this look natural is quite a job.

The construction of these dwellings is quite innovative.
There’s something magical and yet daunting staying underground.
Another challenge was finding suitable talent. Often times a free meal and a bottle of wine was exchanged. At the end of the day it was a rewarding challenge and a great way to reveal the hidden world of living underground in the desert.
